Getting Started using Ameol
An Overview of Ameol

< Previous  |  Next >

What you'll see when you start Ameol

When you start Ameol for the first time you will see four main elements.

At the top of the screen you'll see the a row of menu titles, File, Edit, View, Mail and so on. Below this is a row of buttons, the Toolbar, which
provides shortcuts to some of the commands available in Ameol.

Note: The menus and toolbar items that are available in Ameol will depend on your Ameol set-up.

Below the menu and the toolbar, in the main application workspace, are two windows. The one on the left is called the In Basket and the other
is the Message Window. Another window that is fundamental to the use of Ameol is the Out Basket.

NOTE: The In and Out baskets can be opened by going to the View menu and selecting In or Out Basket or by clicking on the box in the bottom
right of the screen.

The In Basket

The In Basket shows the structure of your message database. You will see folders containing the mail messages you have received and the
newsgroups and Conferences to which you belong.

If you've upgraded from Ameol 1.xx, and have imported your old database (see "Moving your data from Ameol" in Section 2), then you will see
all of your mail and conferences of which you are a member. If you're new to Ameol then you will see an empty database structure except for
the tutorial and places for you News and Mail to go.

The In Basket shows the structure of your message database. The open/closed book symbol at the top of the In Basket window, shows the
name of the message database.

If you click on the '-' symbol, you will see that the tree collapses. If you click the '+' symbol to the left of the closed book symbol, a 'tree' will
drop down once more. The folders shown on the tree structure represent the message groups that are held within the database. A folder can
contain e-mail messages, newsgroup messages or Conference messages.

Next to each of the folders is another '+' symbol. Click on this to expand the tree contained within the folder. Each of the symbols on this tree
denotes a 'topic' held within that folder. Different topics have different symbols. An envelope symbol shows an e-mail topic. A newspaper
symbol denotes a newsgroup topic and a CIX symbol is Conference topic. Once you have connected for the first time you should see another
folder called Logs with a topic called Blinks. This is a list of all the connections you make and what has been done e.g. News being collected,
Mail being sent.

The fraction to the right of each topic name shows first the number of unread messages followed by a slash (/), then the total number of
messages held within that topic. If there are any unread messages within that topic, these numbers will be shown in red.
