Q) How can I tell if I have the most recent spelling checker files installed?
A)Use Help|About Ameol2... On the dialog box displayed, there is a part that says "Spelling Checker © 1994 by Wintertree Software Inc." Under this is the identification of the files. It always begins: "DLL Version 4.21, dictionary date". The date then displayed will be the one indicated in the latest root message of cix:ameol.spell/files.

Q) Why can I not use my MS Word custom dictionary with the new Ameol Spelling -Checker?
A)If you get a message similar to this:

     "Cannot open custom.dic <directory to dictionary>"

when you try to Add... the dictionary in Ameol's Settings|Preferences..., Spelling tab, then it is likely that the dictionary was originally from an earlier version of Word.

To check open it up in a text editor. If the first line is a header record of the form

      #LID 2057

then cut that line out and save it (save the original file somewhere safe before doing this). It should now still work in Word and now also in Ameol.

Q) Why is the "Add" button greyed out on the "Check Spelling" dialog?
A)You haven't configured a custom dictionary. Ameol2 needs a custom dictionary to store words in.

If you do not already have a custom dictionary you will need to create a new one; to do so, follow these steps:

   1. Select Settings|Preferences|Spelling, click the New... button.

   2. Type a name for your dictionary. (N.B, The .dic extension will be added automatically.)

   3. Click the Save button. The custom dictionary will be created and you will be able to add words to it when checking spelling.
