Q) Can I upgrade from an old version of Ameol?
A) Yes, check the version number from Help | About Ameol2.

If you are upgrading from a version prior to 2.54 you will need to update your usenet newsgroup lists after installation.  You can do this from News | Show All Newsgroups and press Update.

If you are upgrading from a version of Ameol2 earlier than 2.53 then you must remove all email items from your outbasket before you upgrade.

You can do this by either posting the emails or deleting them from your outbasket.  This includes all new mail, reply to mail and forward mail items.

Q) How can I use the CIXdesktop setup facility?
A) Parkglobe customers with a CIXdesktop account can now select the new setup routine by running Ameol with the /setup switch as follows:"C:\Program Files\Ameol2\Ameol232.exe" /setup

Running this routine will configure your Full blink and Mail Only blink settings for the mail.cixonline.com server.  This facility should not be used by users who want to collect their email from an alternative ISP. No changes have been made to the existing setup facility for Pipex ICA account holders or manual setups.

Q) How do I decode and view attachments sent by email?
A) Message decoding now works slightly differently in 2.55.  Instead of seeing the binary characters that form an attached message and the HTML code often sent by HTML mail clients such as Outlook, Ameol now strips out the HTML code and automatically hides the binary text, providing an attachment link at the bottom of the email message telling you the attachment file name.  Ameol has not decoded the attached file at this point.

You can press U or choose Decode Binary Attachment from the Message menu exactly the same as before.  This will display attachment file icons at the top of the message.

You can click on the am2file link to decode and save the file in a location of your choice.

You can press the Ctrl key and click on the am2file link to open the file directly.

You can select Attachment Decoder from the Message menu and open the attached file using the decoder.  The attachment decoder addon supports a much wider range of file formats and has been updated to include a number of new MIME types in this version.

The full binary text of an attachment can still be viewed when View Mail/Usenet Headers is selected until the message has been decoded.

Further details can be found in the Help | What's New file.

Q) Why do I see files at the bottom of the email message which only contain the same message?
A) The email client used to send the message is set to also send you the message as an HTML file.

Q) How do I use the vCard facility to export my Ameol address book?
A) You can now choose to export your Ameol address book in vCard format from File | Export | Address Book and Select vCard format.  This has been added to allow users to export their address book details from Ameol and  import them into CIX Online.  You should also be able to use the vCard format to import these details into other compatible software.

Q) Why haven't the Help files been updated.?
A) Due to complications in updating the early Ameol help files they have not been updated, all new features are listed in the Help | What's New file.

Known Issues with 2.55

Underlining issues,
it has been observed that sometimes the underlining feature gets confused and underlines portions of a message as the mouse is moved.  Clicking the mouse normally clears this underlining and it seems to cause no other problems.

Short Hotlinks do not function in the message editor, if you open a message in your outbasket to edit it, a short format link such as  cix:67 will not work if clicked as it has no reference to the correct topic.  This action will then require the escape key to be pressed.  Once posted to a conference these links work as expected.  If you wish to be able to click hotlinks while editing a message you should always use the full format hotlink e.g. cix:cix.support/ameol.faq:67

Word wrapping issues when editing a message.  The new editor inserts hard carriage returns when you compose a message, this can cause problems when editing a message in the outbasket.  We disabled these carriage returns during testing but found it could cause problems with newsgroup postings.

If this issue causes you a problem and you do not use newsgroups you can add an entry to the Windows registry to turn this off again.

If you use Ameol as the default Admin users you can do this by copying the following text between the lines to a text file in Windows Notepad and saving it as linewrap.reg.  Double click on the file and it should insert the correct parameters into the registry for you.

If you login to Ameol as a different user you will need to edit the file and change "ADMIN" for the alternative username that you use.

If you are not familiar with the Windows registry or are unsure about carrying out the procedure then please check with support before attempting this.

How to turn on/off line numbers/line wraps.
