Q) What do I need to do to switch news servers?
A)Ameol2 keeps a record of the number of the last article downloaded for each group; Ameol2 asks the server for all headers (or full articles) since that last number. The problem this presents is that the number is specific to the server. So in order to change news servers you need to:

   A. Resign the group(s) affected from the original server and blink.
   B. Rename the group(s) in your local message base.
   C. Re-subscribe to the group(s) affected using the new server.

Q) How can I avoid getting SPAM from postings in Newsgroups?
A)This depends on whether or not you are using the cixnews server or an Internet server (e.g., news.cix.co.uk) for the group. For the former, then no, you cannot really do much about those. However for the latter, you are able to specify different email addresses for each newsgroup you subscribe to. In order to effect this, use the following to change the default to hide your true identity. You must repeat this procedure for each Newsgroup where you want to use an e-mail address different than the default.

   1.  Use View|In Basket.

   2.  Locate and open your News folder. (By default this is near the top, but you may have moved it; you can navigate to it by typing in "news" -- if the folder found is not the one you want, simply press the space bar to jump to the next one until you do locate it.)

   3.  Right-click on the newsgroup you want to change the details for, choose Properties and select the Usenet tab.

   4.  Here are your "Poster's Details" which you may change to whatever you like. After making any desired changes, click OK.

Now when you post articles to that newsgroup, the "From:" and "Reply-To:" fields are set to these values.

Q) Is it possible to display the size of Usenet articles before downloading them?
A) Not the exact size in bytes and not at all when using the CIX Conferencing news server (cixnews). However Ameol2 does support the ability to discover an approximate size when downloading usenet article headers from an internet news server. If you choose to display the Size column in the thread pane when viewing a newsgroup, you will see the number of lines the article contains when you have downloaded a header or the full article. This gives you an indication of the article size.

Q) I want to collect the full usenet messages, not just headers. How do I do that?
A) Right click on the name of the group in your in basket and select Properties from the resulting popup menu (or use Folder|Properties...). Then click the Settings tab and check the "Download full articles rather than just headers" box.

If you want this setting to apply to all of your usenet groups then follow the instructions above but right click on the News folder that contains your usenet groups (normally 'News').

Q) Why does Ameol2 report that newsgroup articles have been renumbered?
A) Because Ameol2 keeps a record of the number of the last article downloaded for each group, and when Ameol2 asked the server for all headers (or full articles) since that last number, it was told that that number was out of range.

This can happen for one of three reasons:

1. You previously collected news from the CIX COnferencing SYstem server (cixnews) but are now trying to collect it from an internet server (e.g., news.cix .co.uk). If you wish to change to collecting news from your IP server, you will need to delete (if the information is of no value) or rename (if you wish to retain the articles you have) the newsgroup in Ameol2 and resubscribe to the newsgroup on your IP server.

or

2. You previously downloaded an article header for the group, then tagged the article for retrieval but left it too long before the article was deleted from the news server. In this case you must remember to act more swiftly in the future.

or

3. Because, through no fault of yours, the articles have been renumbered on the server.

The way to overcome this problem is to:

   A. Resign the group(s) affected and blink.
   B. Rename the group(s).
   C. Re-subscribe to the group(s).
