Why? Q) Why does my e-mail stick in the outbasket with a red exclamation mark? Why do I see the "Relaying denied" message in my logs? Parkglobe CIXdesktop customers using mail.cixonline.com: Customers using mail.cixonline.com with Ameol can use SMTP Authentication to send email. Make sure you are using the latest version of Ameol, available from http://www.ameol.com or from cix:cix.support/files. Right click on the blink icon you use and choose Properties. On the Internet tab set the SMTP server to mail.cixonline.com, tick "This server requires authentication" and enter your username and password in the boxes provided. Customers using Outlook can find these settings in the server properties for the mail account. If the above conditions are not satisfied, attempting to send e-mail to an address outside of CIX results in the message "Relaying denied". (Mail to a CIX address is accepted.) So if you are connecting via another ISP, you need to tell your e-mail software to use a different SMTP mail server for outgoing mail, or you need to connect to the POP3 server first. You can still collect mail from the POP3 server. (On CIX the names of both servers, SMTP & POP3, are the same: mail.cix.co.uk.) In Ameol, there are a variety of ways to ensure that you use the POP3 server first. E.G., Using Settings|Mail..., on the Internet tab ensure the "Collect POP3 mail at end of blink" is unchecked or Keep a POP3 action in your outbasket such as "Clear Internet mail older than N days". (You can place a request like that into the outbasket via Mail|Clear Internet Mail, then select it in the outbasket & click the 'Keep' button.) You will notice also that the default mail server names are also stored on the Internet tab of Settings|Mail... However, be aware that each entry on the Blinks tab of Settings|Communications... can have its own SMTP server name set. To see this click the Edit... button for the selected entry and select the Internet tab. Thus it is possible to have one blink entry set to dial CIX Internet, another to dial Easynet, etc. The CIX blink entries need to have the CIX SMTP server set, the Easynet entries need the Easynet server, etc. Q) Is there any easy way to export POP3 messages that are in my Ameol mailbox into Outlook or some other e-mail client? See cix:the_bat/files:22. To use the utility, you need to export as the e-mail messages in CIX Scratchpad format without message attributes selected. It works with multiple input files in one pass. Note that there are some limitations: * As the utility uses the presence of the "Memo #" on a new line to identify a new message, potentially any message with this phrase as the first six characters on a new line will cause it to identify wrongly the start of a new e-mail message. * The utility does not fix bad content headers. As a result a message with an attachment or that previously had an attachment may not import correctly into the new client. Due to the fact that Ameol leaves headers as is in a message that has had an attachment decoded and removed from the message, these will result in a blank imported message in the other e-mail client. The worst may be that could happen is that the import might fail. Q) Why doesn't the "Return Receipt" (RR) button work/appear on my e-mail form? The button will not even appear on the form if you install Ameol for Dial-Up Conferencing only. If you install Ameol for any other type of access, the button will appear but will have no effect if your Settings|Mail..., Delivery tab option indicates that Ameol is to send the message via CIX Conferencing. It is accepted that if the option in Settings|Mail..., Delivery tab chosen causes Ameol to deliver the message via CIX Conferencing, the button should be removed or greyed out. Q) Why should I toggle my Conferencing mail to use my internet (POP3/SMTP) mailbox? * Is robust & flexible. (It uses standard Internet protocols.) * Provides for faster collection and sending of e-mail when making a e-mail only connection. * Allows you to use multiple e-mail addresses for sorting incoming e-mail. E.G., John@yourid.co.uk and Mary@yourid.co.uk. * Allows the use of spam control software. * Allows the use of simple e-mail checking software to receive notification of incoming mail. * Allows the use of MIME encoding when sending attachments. * Mail is retained on the POP3 server for a longer period than on the Conferencing system. * You can use any POP3 compliant software to collect your mail, if necessary. Q) How do I recover read mail from the POP3 server? Note that if you are not using the default Administrator login, the directory will not be <Ameol base directory>\users\admin but rather <Ameol base directory>\users\<username>. Please be careful if you have not been clearing your POP3 mailbox regularly as this may involve a large download. You are advised to check and clear any old email from the server using a webmail interface before deleting your UIDL.dat file. This action will result in any email on the server that has already been downloaded being downloaded again so you will end up with duplicates. Q) How can I use Ameol to get all my mail sent to my Internet POP3 mailbox? If you wish to cancel the forwarding of CIX Conferencing mail to your POP3 mailbox, use File|Scripts... and search for a script called "Set mail forwarding to CIX Conferencing mailbox". If you are unsure of the status of mail forwarding of your CIX ID, then use File|Scripts... and search for a script called "Check CIX Conferencing mail forwarding status". Now click the Close button and blink. You will need to watch the terminal window during connection or look in your connect log after the connection has completed to view the results Q) Why can't I choose MIME as the format to send my files by email? The old CIX Conferencing mail server is not able to send MIME messages. The Pipex mail.cix.co.uk and CIX Online mail.cixonline.com mail servers are able to send MIME messages, as are most other internet mail servers. If your mail message is going to be sent via CIX Conferencing you will not be able to choose MIME as the format to send files by mail. You should choose UUencoding if the recipient is not a CIX user, or binmail if the recipient is a CIX user. [Your mail message will be sent by CIX Conferencing if Settings|Mail, Delivery tab has "Always use CIX Conferencing" set or "Mail to a CIX user is sent using CIX Conferencing" and the mail message is to a CIX user.] You can receive MIME messages using the CIX Conferencing mail server. Q) Can you please explain more about Rules? 1. The logic employed is AND. That is, if you specify a From, To and Subject field, then only if a message matches all three criteria is the rule deemed to be successful. 2. For the From and To field, you can specify either a username or a fully-qualified e-mail address. For example: If you specify a username only, then mail to that username from any domain will match. Given the above example, mail from or to any of the following will match a username of simon: The following will NOT match: If you specify a fully qualified address, then only mail from or to that address will match. In the examples given above, only mail from or to simon@cix.compulink.co.uk will match. 3. All text in the fields is not case sensitive. So simon, Simon and SIMON will all match a rule. 4. When moving a message to another topic, any rules in the destination topic are applied to the message. This may result in the message being moved further. Ameol2 will handle circular instances and will not move a message back to the original topic. There is more information about rules in What is the best way to get Ameol rules to handle mailing lists? Q) What is the best way to get Ameol rules to handle mailing lists? Sender: mailing-list@somewhere.com For this example you can then set the rule up to search for 'Sender: mailing-list@somewhere.com' in the 'Message body'. or perhaps all messages to the mailing list have a line saying X-List-Info: Widget Appreciation Mailing List For this example you can then set the rule up to search for 'X-List-Info: Widget Appreciation Mailing List' in the 'Message body'. As a general rule, the extra header will be of the form some-header: some info Q) When sending mail using my internet account I sometimes don't get my copy (the CC) until my next connection. Why?
